Royal Guards

The Royal Guards are the Crown’s shield and standard—ever at the King’s side, keeping the Court secure while delighting the crowd with good humor and showmanship. On any day you’ll find them on royal detail, managing ceremonies, and lending spark to our Living History.

The Guards’ foremost duty is to protect the Royal Family during processions, audiences, and public appearances. They also apprehend ne’er-do-wells in scripted scenes and maintain order at Court, guiding “muggles” through playful arrests and mock trials that keep the atmosphere lively and safe for all.

At state occasions, the Guards assist at Knightings by bearing the Canopy of Honour and keeping the ceremonial space precise and dignified. In the field, they fight in choreographed battle pageants, drilling with period weapons and formations. When history calls for it, they perform “executions” strictly as staged historical demonstrations—carefully rehearsed, clearly sign-posted, and safety-led at every step.

There are two paths of service within the Guards. The Yeoman of the Guard are the Crown’s official soldiery, holding formal rank and title within the Guild’s military structure. They lead drill, take precedence at state functions, and set the unit’s standard for discipline and ceremony.

Alongside them marches the Band of Mercenaries—seasoned freeblades under contract to the Crown. They share the Yeoman’s duties and enjoy royal privileges while on service, bringing adaptable skills, colorful kit (within period guidelines), and a roguish charm that the audience loves.

Training & Safety. All weapons work, arrests, and “executions” are fully scripted and rehearsed. New Guards receive instruction in period drill and commands, weapons handling and choreography, court protocol (including canopy duties), guest interaction, and crowd safety.

Kit & Appearance. The Guards present a Renaissance look aligned with Guild guidelines. Yeomen favor a more uniform appearance with visible rank; Mercenaries keep a coordinated but varied company style. Loaner gear may be available; final kit is approved by Guard leadership.
